Twitter in Schools

My own school (Lanchester EP - Co.Durham) celebrates three years on Twitter this month. In that time staff have tweeted over 5,000 times, sharing little snippets of daily life in school. We now also have in excess of 650 followers. This gives pupils a real audience and pride in their work that is shared. Our school Twitter account also allows us to engage with fantastic people who can help to bring our curriculum to life. Highlights include interacting with authors such as Francesca Simon and Berlie Doherty, with Olympic golf medalist Denise Lewis and an awesome interaction with astronaut Tim Peake on board the International Space Station. Using social media in schools is about far more than reminding people about trip money or sharing just the 'big events'. When social media is used correctly it is an amazing opportunity to educate pupils in how to post safely and correctly online and to enhance your curriculum in ways that just otherwise wouldn't be possible.
